How Greg Thurmond Got His Scar and What It Took to Make This Beast a Real Beauty

Greg Thurmond standing next to his '65 Corvette

Greg Thurmond and his beauty, the 1965 Candy Tangerine Chevy Corvette, SCAR

Have you ever stopped to think where beauty comes from? Really, so many beautiful things we see, day in and day out, come from nature. A beautiful sunrise or sunset, flowers, a smile, CARS! Okay, so cars are not from nature, but still.

Greg Thurmond, owner of GTS Customs Corvette Specialists, showed up to the 2015 SEMA show with one of the sweetest vintage Corvettes we’d ever seen. Shining bright like a diamond under the unforgiving fluorescent lights at the Spectre Performance booth, his fifty shades of orange Candy Tangerine custom paint job made most people stop dead in their tracks. Now that’s sweet!

Truth be told that insane 1965 Corvette resto-mod, pro-touring machine didn’t start its life as it sits now. No, it started as a factory build, then morphed into a gasser, that sat and sat for more than thirty-five years. It sat as a project hopeful. It sat as the, “One day when I find the time” car that almost didn’t get to see its full potential. Almost culminating into a day of reckoning.

SCAR before the transformation

SCAR sat in disrepair for more than 35 years before being resurrected by Thurmond

So began the life or rather the resurrection of one very amazing piece of automotive machinery! This candy tangerine beast, the 1965 Corvette nicknamed SCAR, was seriously plucked out of a line up of about twenty or so desert derelicts that came across the desk of our Spectre Performance-sponsored driver’s desk. Who, as luck would have it, happens to be one of the nation’s premier Corvette builders!

The story goes something like this. A guy walked into GTS Customs announcing that he had stumbled upon a near Holy Grail of Corvette finds. Not in a barn, nor at an auction. But laid out in the desert amidst the sand and dust, blistering sun and heat, and the more than occasional wind storm. He was fixing to make an offer on the whole lot and needed some assistance establishing a value for this group of misfits. In exchange for his help, Greg encouraged this “guy” to give him first crack at buying the 1965 Vette if and when the deal went through. And the deal almost didn’t go through. Obviously it did eventually, otherwise you’d be reading an entirely different story! Anyway that is how it all started! Just two short years ago.

Over a thousand hours creating the perfect profile without compromisingthe already killer body lines

Greg mentioned that while breaking bread with some of the industry elite, Jim McIlvaine and Cam Douglass, he was inspired to get moving on the build. In fact with the intention of having it finished for SEMA 2015. One conversation led to another, and before long sponsors like Lingenfelter, RideTech, and Centerforce were on board to assist with the build. Then the good folks over at Wilwood Disc Brakes, Falken Tires, and Legend Gear and Transmission got in on the fun! Before long Thurmond had more than 20 sponsors on board for what would become a featured build at the Spectre Performance booth. Tension mounted, excitement ensued and talk about seemingly endless amounts of work began to erupt.

Photo of the rear end on the '65 Corvette.

Wider is better according to Thurmond. The extra width allows for updated suspension.

This would be his first Corvette that was actually purpose built for the pro-touring scene, specifically autocross. Thurmond would build this car, SCAR - Southern California Autocross Racer - the way he felt it needed to be built to be competitive as well as showcase his talent and abilities as a Corvette builder. Every detail, every bit of prep and finish work done by hand, done solely by Thurmond. He takes great pride in being able to say that he did the work. Every late night made worth it at the reveal in Las Vegas at SEMA 2015. One of his favorite parts of this car is the Stinger Hood. Look closely and notice that every sponsor who participated in this build has been included in that custom candy paint job right there on that hood. No folks, that’s not a wrap. Thurmond’s wife obtained or recreated each logo, set the layout, contracted a local company to create a stencil that would be used to mask the hood so he could pay homage to ALL of the brands that supported and partnered to make this build possible in under a year and of course SEMA worthy. With more than a thousand hours in the modified quarters and front end he feels he hit the nail on the head with the choices he made. We couldn’t agree more.

Like Father, Like Daughter - Spectre Performance Driver Showdown

Brandy Phillips in the Intro Wheel Camaro

Spectre Performance-sponsored driver, Brandy Morrow Phillips, being her silly self!

Imagine that you grew up around cars and most of you probably did. Now imagine for a moment that your dad worked for one of the nation’s leading brands of intake and performance parts. Now just for giggles, let's say your dad was a former competitor in the SCCA and he taught you everything he knew about competition, speed, and handling. Then you had a chance to go balls to the wall and throw down with ole pops at the industry’s most talked about series finale. You'd do it wouldn't you?

Well that's just what happened at the 2016 OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational at Las Vegas Motor Speedway immediately following the 50th Anniversary SEMA show at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Mike Morrow head shot

Spectre Performance Brand Manager Mike Morrow

You may recall the Spectre Performance recap of the 6th NMCA West Coast Nationals and Hotchkis Cup Challenge that took place in June. Spectre Performance-sponsored driver, Brandy Phillips along with her husband, Rob, her brother Ryan Morrow, and their long time family friend, Matt Briggs, had done an update on our very own Brand Manager, Michael Morrow's, Fox Body Mustang that hadn’t seen a course since 2012. Mike didn’t have a clue what was happening and that made this particular Father’s Day that much more special. After the “kids” presented him with his ride, Briggs informed him that they had secured him an entry to the weekend event. That my friends is what you call “game on”!

Little did we know what would happen in the months to come. We caught a little glimpse of the future when we saw Mike get behind the wheel of the C10R, built by the husband and wife team of PCHRods, also known and Brandy and Rob Phillips! You see it turns out that Mike was getting comfortable with the truck as he would be driving the C10R at the 2016 OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational immediately following the 50th Anniversary SEMA Show. He would be driving for the series sponsor, Spectre Performance. But this left a whole lot of folks confused and a little concerned. People were use to seeing Brandy wheel that custom pro-touring truck around. Why wouldn’t she be racing?

PCHRods C10R on Optima Alley

The PCHRods C10R with a bold new color scheme on OPTIMA Alley

For the latter part of the race season the team over at PCHRods was elbow deep in a SEMA build for Intro Wheels to be featured at the Hedman Headers booth. But this build was shrouded in secrecy and the only morsel of information we were fed? It’s a 1969 Camaro! As we discovered at the unveiling at SEMA, it was a rather special 1969 Pro-touring Camaro. But what of Brandy and her C10R?

Since its inception 9 years ago, the OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational has been the crown and glory of the SEMA show and the culmination of an exciting race season. During SEMA week, OPTIMA Batteries hands out certificates of consideration for a chance to be one of the 10 Golden Ticket winners. It has been OPTIMA’S contention to see if these insane builds can perform on the track, not just sit pretty! So it should come as no surprise that indeed the build by PCHRods for Intro Wheels that graced the red carpet of the Hedman Headers booth would in fact be a Golden Ticket contender.

Brand Phillips name above C10R door crossed out for Brandy's Dad

Since Brandy wouldn't be behind the wheel of the C10R, her name above the door didn't seem fitting

Fast forward to the OPTIMA Batteries press conference where the 10 Golden Ticket winners would be announced along with some other very exciting race season news. And yes, you’ve guessed it, Brandy Phillips would be competing in the PCHRods-built 1969 Pro-touring Camaro for Intro Wheels. Hey wait a minute, that means she got to throw down with her pops!

One very important consideration that people may overlook. Many of the builds that come to SEMA go through what folks in the industry refer to as the SEMA thrash. That means using every last minute, right until the transport arrives to pick up the build, the builder is putting on the final touches. And in many instances that beautiful hardware flanking the aisles of SEMA may not even run. Or maybe it runs, but it hasn’t had its shakedown time. Imagine that you are holding a Golden Ticket for the most coveted event of the year and you have no idea if your build can even compete! Yeah this was definitely going through Brandy’s mind. But would she miss the opportunity to challenge dad? Not a chance. It was time to throw caution to the wind and RACE!

Mike Morrow in the C10R on the Road Course

Mike Morrow tearing up the Falken Tire Time Trial Road Course at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Needless to say racing is in their blood and neither would be willing to throw a race so this made for some very playful banter. Mike knew he hadn’t had the seat time he needed and realized there may be folks with some expectations. But to see him back behind the wheel being competitive had everyone on their feet as they watched him compete. Brandy is always a crowd favorite in her C10R and even more so to see her running what her team at PCHRods built was even more gratifying. It gave her the perfect opportunity to log some new ideas and even tweak things to make the Intro Wheels 1969 Pro-touring Camaro perform even better.

Take a peek at some of the weekend highlights from OUSCI of Brandy Phillips and her dad Mike Morrow showing all of us what this pro-touring life is all about, family and friends. And maybe even going fast!

Spectre Air Filters Improve Performance on 1991-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nissa

Spectre HPR7440 Air Filter for the 1991-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nissan SUV.

The Spectre HPR7440 Air Filter is guaranteed to perform for up to 10 years or 1,000,000 miles.

Based on military vehicles of World War II, the sports utility vehicle (SUV) gained popularity in the United States through the 1990s and early 2000s. The first vehicle to be recognized as an SUV was the Jeep Cherokee (XJ), which was introduced by American Motors in 1984.

U.S. automakers liked it because they could garner a profit of $10,000 per unit at a time when they were losing money on compact vehicles. Consumers liked the large cabins, the ride height, and the apparent safety because they were massive compared to smaller vehicles that shared the road. It was an ideal vehicle for driving the kids to their after-school activities because they featured three-rows of seats.

SUVs were constructed over a truck chassis, which permitted more cargo space in the cabin than a conventional automobile. Many of these vehicles also featured four-wheel drive so they were ideal for off-roading.

This classification of car was so popular that the major automakers including Chrysler, which now owns Jeep; General Motors, Nissan and others introduced several SUV models in different sizes including mini, compact, mid-size, full-size, and extended length.

For example, Nissan introduced a compact SUV called the Xterra to North America in the 2000 model year, which shared the same platform as the Nissan Frontier pickup truck; a full-size SUV called the Armada in 2003, which used the same platform as the Nissan Titan pickup truck; and the Pathfinder in 1985, a two-door SUV. Nissan’s luxury division, Infiniti introduced the QX56, a full-size luxury SUV, in 2004.

American Motors and later Chrysler offered variations of the Jeep including the Cherokee, the Grand Cherokee in 1993 and the Jeep Wrangler, a compact to mid-size SUV in 1986.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency considered SUVs as light trucks. So rules relating to tailpipe emissions on them were less stringent. However, starting in 2004, the EPA began to recognize that the SUV should have the same standards of tailpipe emissions as cars.

That ruling along with another oil embargo made SUVs less attractive and sales started to drop.

Spectre is aware of the need to make air filters for this classification of vehicle and offers the Spectre HPR7440 Air Filter for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Nissan Pathfinder, Xterra, and Armada as well as pickup trucks like the Nissan Titan and Frontier.

The replacement filters are reusable and offer high airflow that helps to enhance horsepower and rate of acceleration. They last up to 50,000 miles before cleaning is required depending on driving conditions.

You can use K&N 99-5050 filter cleaning kit after the 50,000 miles and then re-place the filter into the factory filter housing until the vehicle rolls up another 50,000 miles when the kit can be used again. This assures that the K&N HPR7440 Spectre air filter can be used over and over and over again saving you from making repeated purchases of air filters.

The filter is so effective catching dirt and contaminants because it features four to six layers of cotton gauze media treated with a specially formulated grade of filter oil that is sandwiched between two aluminum wire screens. The oil provides the tackiness necessary for catching impurities to ensure that your engine is protected.

The K&N HPR7440 Spectre Air Filter can be used on the following vehicles:
