When Mercedes bought the beleaguered Chrysler Corp. in 1998, they set about reinventing its image. To do that, German and American engineers collaborated to develop the rear-wheel drive LX-platform, then they developed an all-new 5.7L Hemi V8 to power the top models. With a versatile RWD chassis and modern Hemi engine to work with, Daimler-Chrysler designers went to the archives and recreated three of the brand's most iconic models. Now under Fiat control, these second generation Hemi Mopars continue to set the standards for American performance and style. The 2011-2015 Chrysler 300C & 2012-2015 Chrysler 300S remain the brand's flagship sedans, and harken back to when 'Chrysler 300 Letter Cars' were the preferred banker's hot rod. The 2011-2015 Dodge Charger R/T 5.7 Hemi gained two doors, along with the respect of muscle car fans, and police departments. And just like its namesake did decades ago, the 2011-2015 Dodge Challenger 5.7 Hemi became the automaker's main competitor in the modern muscle car wars. But just because you own one of these rumbling monsters, doesn't mean you have to settle for 368-375-hp. A Hemi engine gets its name from the hemispherical heads that allow it to create so much horsepower. Unlike the more common angular head design, the heads on a Chysler/Dodge 5.7L Hemi are concave, with oversized intake valves, and spark plugs that sit at the very top of the combustion chamber. This additional space allows the dome-shaped pistons to create a more highly pressurized fuel/air mixture as it travels upward. When the spark plugs ignite this volatile mix, the extra pressure causes a more powerful explosion, and the hemispherical shape contains the heat, so the gas is consumed more completely. The force that's generated during this Hemi-optimized combustion cycle (i.e. Horsepower), forces the piston back down, turning the crankshaft, and ultimately the rear-wheels. One way to increase the horsepower and torque of your Chrysler 300C Hemi, Dodge Charger Hemi, or Dodge Challenger Hemi, is simply to inject colder air into the cylinders. The additional oxygen molecules in cold air will cause the gas to detonate more forcefully, and that creates more wheel-turning horsepower. On an OEM HEMI 5.7 liter intake system, air gets sucked through a small opening in the bottom of the airbox, before being forced through a thick paper air filter. As the miles rack up, dirt starts to collect on the surface of the OEM air filter, which reduces the amount of air that can pass through it. Once the air gets past the filter, it's hurled down a narrow plastic intake tube that's full of uneven, accordion-like surfaces. This causes the air to bounce around and become turbulent, which increases the temperature, and reduces its oxygen content. The Spectre 9036 Cold Air Intake System ditches those stock, power-killing components and increases horsepower by delivering a higher volume of smooth, oxygen rich air to the cylinders.

To add horsepower to your 5.7L Hemi, the Spectre 9036 Air Intake System replaces the factory airbox with a large synthetic Spectre performance air filter, which is protected from hot engine air by a powder coated steel heat shield that seals against the hood. This reusable high-flow filter can feed more air into the system, and the oiled synthetic material is able to trap more contaminants than a conventional paper filter. Once the air is cleaned, it gets funneled to the engine through a wide diameter polished aluminum intake tube. The smooth interior surface and wide angle bends virtually eliminate air turbulence, and creates an unobstructed airflow path to the cylinders.

The Toyota Tacoma might not be the cheapest small truck on the market, but you certainly get your money's worth. Depending on the cab/bed configuration, the little 'Taco' can haul lots of people and lots of stuff. There's several insanely capable off-road "Grades" for the Tacoma 4x4, and opting for the Toyota 4.0L V6 with the towing package (transmission/oil coolers etc.) will net you a tow capacity of 6,400 lbs. Even with dual overhead cams and variable valve timing, the 1GR-FE V6 is relativity simple by today's standards. The 236-hp that it produces is also a bit behind the times, as many modern 4-cylinder engines can easily eclipse that figure. You can however, increase the horsepower and torque on your 2012-2015 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L, by simply installing a Spectre 9013 Cold Air Intake System.

An engine makes power by igniting gasoline inside the cylinders. In order to make the fuel burn, air is mixed with the gas, and the two are compressed as the piston travels upward. This pressurized cocktail is then lit by the spark plug, and the resulting explosion forces the piston back down, turning the crankshaft, and ultimately the wheels. This explosive force is where horsepower comes from, and you can increase it by simply adding more oxygen molecules to the air/fuel mixture. Cold air contains this additional oxygen, and the Spectre 9013 Intake System is designed to feed a high volume this catalyst, directly into the throttle body.

The stock intake on a 2012 - 2015 Toyota Tacoma 4.0L, limits airflow by using restrictive components. Air first has to enter a tiny hole at the bottom of the resonator, before being forced down a narrow flex-tube that bends around to the side of the throttle body. Once it arrives, the air then has to pass through a thick paper air filter, which can reduce the airflow even further (depending on how dirty it is). All of these obstacles cause the air to heat up, which reduces the oxygen content.

To increase the horsepower in a Toyota 1GR-FE 4.0L V6, the Spectre 9013 Cold Air Intake System uses a special airbox cover that clamps onto the side of the throttle body, eliminating the OEM air filter placement. An extremely short, wide diameter intake tube is then fitted between the cover and a metal heat shield, which seals against the underside of the hood to separate the air filter from the hot engine bay. The oversized Spectre performance air filter is positioned to collect cooler air coming into the engine compartment, and its high-flow design is able to flow more clean air into the system. It can also be cleaned and reused, allowing you to quickly restore performance after stomping through dusty/muddy terrain.

Lynda Jacobs is no stranger to an autocross, but that was not the case for the 1954 Chevrolet Bel Air Lynda and her husband, Chris Jacobs, brought to the Fort Worth, Texas Goodguys event.  Lynda is usually behind the wheel of a 1966 Chevelle named “Whimpy.”  Do not let the name fool you.  Lynda and the ’66 Chevelle have not only competed in several races across the country, they bring some fierce competition come race day.  Lynda has been racing on the Goodguys autocross circuit for several years, acquiring plenty of seat time along the way.  This defiantly showed, as she was able to jump into the 1954 Bel Air and take the lead in the Hot Rod Class.

When the 1954 Bel Air rolled up to the starting line, all focus was directed on car and driver.  It was rare to see a Bel Air racing around an autocross, especially one that handled well.  Texas brought tough competition.  A handful of competitors had raced the weekend before at the Goodguys Scottsdale, Arizona event, allowing them to shakedown their vehicles and prepare for the race the following weekend. 

This would be the first event out for Spectre Performance driver Lynda Jacobs during the 2016 race season.  The 1954 Bel Air, owned by Harold and Tracy Chapman, made its way to Texas for a complete shakedown before heading south to Hot Rods and Customs of Andice.

The 1954 Chevy Bel Air is anything but stock.  Equipped with a complete Roadster Shop Fast Track chassis, the Bel Air has a Donald Hardy LSX 454 supercharged engine with a Bowler 4L80E transmission.  The only thing holding the car back may be weight, which came in at 4,199 lbs.  Though the Bel Air weighs more than most vehicles that participate in the Goodguys Autocross, it did not phase Lynda as she threw the car around the track.

Placing first in the Hot Rod Class meant Lynda would move into the Pro Class for the remainder of the year.  Getting into this class is an accomplishment within itself.  Many racers attend several Goodguys autocross events with the hopes of making it into the Pro Class, but often fall short.

It is always a good feeling to start the year with a win.  We will most likely see Lynda back behind the wheel of her Spectre Performance sponsored ’66 Chevelle in the upcoming months.  As Lynda continues to race in the Pro Class, she will be facing some tough competition including drivers like Chris Smith and the Spectre Performance sponsored RideTech 48 Hour Corvette, two-time champion Danny Popp in his K&N 1972 Corvette, Kyle Tucker and the DSE equipped 1970 Camaro, and the virtually unstoppable Scott Fraser in his 1966 Cobra.  Regardless the outcome, one thing is for sure, Lynda will definitely put on a show no matter what vehicle she brings to the track.

Racing For A Cause: Brandy Phillips Races To Help Goodguys Autocross For Kids

The Spectre Performance sponsored C10R teams up with the Austin Hatcher Foundation to help raise money for pediatric cancer

Several Goodguys autocross competitors race to win, but racing for a good cause can be just as rewarding.  Goodguys Rod and Custom Association teamed up with the Austin Hatcher Foundation by creating the Goodguys Autocross for Kids.  The mission is to raise funds and awareness for Pediatric Cancer, helping those children currently diagnosed with cancer, survivors and their families.  The Goodguys Autocross for Kids fundraiser encourages participants to donate a minimum of $20 for a ride with a Goodguys Pro Class Driver on the autocross.  The program was started last year and with much success, has expanded to several of the Goodguys West Coast events for the 2016 season.

Spectre Performance driver Brandy Phillips earned her way into the Goodguys Autocross Pro Class after competing in her 1972 Spectre equipped C-10, known as the PCHRODS C10R.  The Goodguys Duel in the Desert Shootout, held in Scottsdale, Arizona at the end of last year, is one of the biggest events for the pro-touring community.  A power steering failure right before the shootout left Phillips questioning if she could even compete in the thirty-two-car bracket race.  Phillips had to place one run in the shootout in order to automatically qualify as a 2016 Pro Class Driver.  Though getting knocked out in the beginning of the shootout, Phillips powered through the race, securing her spot on the 2016 Pro Class team.

Phillips returned to Scottsdale, Arizona for the first Goodguys Rod and Custom event of the year, the 7th Spring Nationals.  Upon arriving in the pits, members of the Austin Hatcher Foundation approached Phillips asking if she would participate in the program throughout the weekend.  Unfortunately, power steering problems set Phillips back once again, while the PCHRODS team struggled to replace the power steering pump and get the truck back up and running before the end of Friday.  With the help of Detroit Speed and Engineering, Phillips was able to run two test laps Friday evening, making sure the truck was safe for passengers come Saturday morning.

With only a couple Pro Class vehicles available for ride-alongs, Phillips joined the small group of drivers; giving Autocross rides to Kids passengers both Saturday and Sunday.  By the end of Sunday Phillips had given approximately a dozen rides for the Austin Hatcher Foundation.   Phillips recalls, “By the end of Saturday there were no Pro Class drivers left, so we started doing round-robin laps as one passenger got out and the next strapped in until all the people who donated had gone for a ride.  Of course I did not mind because I was able to get some much needed seat time along with giving these passengers a unique and memorable experience they could take home and share with their friends and family.”

Phillips will continue to participate in the Autocross for Kids Program throughout the year, hoping to raise more money for the cause, while also encouraging other drivers to join in on the program and make a difference.  Phillips plans to attend next month’s Goodguys Del Mar, California race with the Spectre Performance PCHRODS C10R.  If all goes as planned, the C10R should see quite a few laps around the autocross in Del Mar. Meanwhile, Phillips continues to raise money for the Austin Hatcher Foundation before the program heads back East.
