2001-2012 Ford, Mazda Sedans, SUVs with Spectre Performance Air Filters Stay Road-Worthy

Spectre Performance HPR8997 replacement air filter

Constructed of a pre-dyed synthetic non-woven media, reinforced with steel mesh and held in a durable polyurethane frame, the Spectre Performance HPR8997 filter is designed to trap more dust and particles than stock or other disposable paper replacement filters.

The new millennium in the automotive industry was populated by a proliferation of SUVs. Nearly every manufacturer brought something new to market and among them were Ford's Escape and Maverick (for Europe and China), Mazda's Tribute, and Mercury's Mariner. Sharing engineering, design, and manufacturing best practices as part of their 20+ year collaboration, Ford (owned a 33 percent stake in Mazda at the time) and Mazda took on Toyota and Honda with their small, fun-to-drive utes.

Car-like road manners, comfortable interiors, and power choices over the years between 2L, 2.3L 4-cyl, and 3.0L V6, then 2.5L 4-cyl for the Escape and Mariner made these SUVs likeable and serviceable for a decade. Tribute's 2.3L and 3.0L 4-cyl power plants coupled with MacPherson strut and rear multi-link suspension were Mazda innovations that earned the vehicle accolades for its sports-car feel.

Holding the course and fulfilling the mid-size to full-size family sedan segment for Ford were the Taurus and Mercury Sable. Redesigned in 1996 in a distinctive oval shape, the third-generation Taurus was the first sedan to be approved for NASCAR competition, winning the then-titled Winston Cup with Dale Jarrett driving. The Sable was praised for its sporty performance in its own right and was popular for its comfort and affordability. The pair got another redesign, and a power upgrade with the 3.0L Duratec engine in 2000, as Ford actively worked to regain Taurus's stature as the best-selling car in America (which it had held between 1992 and 1996).

Staples of the U.S. automotive economy for another six years, they are still ferrying families and commuters on their daily rounds as survivors of the millennium.

Dependability and solid performance form the bottom line among these competent machines, and keeping them road-worthy requires they have a well-maintained air filtration system. Spectre Performance makes that maintenance requirement easy to fulfill with a panel-shaped replacement air filter that precisely fits the stock Duratec air box. The HPR8997 goes one step further by being washable and reusable, and is backed by a limited warranty against workmanship and materials.

Constructed of a pre-dyed synthetic non-woven media, reinforced with steel mesh and held in a durable polyurethane frame, this filter is designed to trap more dust and particles than stock or other disposable paper replacement filters. It is engineered to have a greater surface area in the same dimensions, which increases its efficiency. When it's time for a filter service (at least once a year, or about every 12,000 miles, depending on driving conditions), the HPR8997 can be easily removed, sprayed with the Spectre Performance filter cleaner, rinsed, and dried. After checking the air box for larger pieces of road debris and another spray with the Spectre Performance refresher spray, the filter can be replaced and the job is done.

It is an affordable alternative to buying and disposing of paper filters and can extend the life of your Ford or Mazda SUV or sedan. It's a simple investment that will provide clean, fresh air for the engine and peace of mind for the owner.

2005-2015 Nissan Titan & Armada, Infiniti QX56 5.6L V8 with Spectre Air Intake Breathe Easier

2005 – 2014 5.6L Nissan Titan

Your 5.6L will be able to breathe easier with the help of the Spectre 9951 intake kit

A cold air intake system is a relatively inexpensive modification, adding horsepower and torque to your ride but is much easier to install than most other engine modifications. Here’s how it helps gain power: recall the last time you had a cold and you felt all stuffed up? After you felt better, you could breathe clearly, right? That’s sort of the effect that installing a cold air intake system has on your vehicle. The Spectre 9951 air intake system for 2005 – 2014 5.6L Nissan Titan and Armada, and 2004-2010 Infiniti QX56, brings performance increases that can be achieved by a DIY installation that takes around 90 minutes with simple hand tools and no re-calibration of engine electronics required.

The Spectre 9951 moves the air intake away from the hot engine and protects it with a heat shield so cooler outside air can reach the air filter. Cooler air is denser, carrying additional air molecules to the engine, increasing horsepower. If you’ve ever driven your car on a cool morning and noticed it seemed a bit more powerful -- that’s the effect we’re talking about.

A Spectre Air Intake System will add horsepower and torque to your 2005 – 2014 5.6 L Nissan Titan and Armada, and 2004-2010 Infiniti QX56

If you’ve ever looked under the hood of your Nissan 5.6L V8 and traced the path the air intake hose travels to reach the throttle body, you’ll see that it’s less than a straight line. The 9951 air intake kit uses a large diameter aluminum intake tube that’s smoother with fewer bends providing higher airflow capacity than the OEM hose.

The Spectre 9951 air intake system utilizes a non-woven synthetic filter media to help protect your engine from harmful debris. In addition, the filter is available in four colors: 9951 (red), 9951B (blue), 9951K (black), and 9951W (white).

The air intake system comes with the above-mentioned reusable low restriction air filter, high quality tubing, and a black powder coated heat shield to help prevent hot engine air from entering the intake inlet. Spectre air intake systems come with the necessary boots, clamps, and hardware for an OE fit and finish. The kit also accommodates all factory emissions and vacuum lines. OEM mounting brackets and hardware are utilized to allow for quick and easy installation.

Brian Finch’s Spectre Performance Equipped 1967 Mustang with a Twist

Brian Finch rendering of a 1967 Mustang body with a 2011 Mustang front end

Brian Finch released a rendering of his latest build, which combines a 1967 Mustang body with a 2011 Mustang front end

Brian Finch is a name many are familiar with in the pro-touring community. Finch’s Spectre Performance equipped 1970 Camaro was quickly recognized as one of the fastest cars on the pro-touring race circuit in 2009 and 2010. Finch and the Camaro traveled across the country racing in events like the Goodguys Autocross, the Optima Series, Holley’s LS Fest, and the Midwest Muscle Car Challenge. As the years passed, competition grew, new performance parts became available and cars essentially got faster. Though the Camaro had a very well established reputation, Finch decided it was time for something new. This is where the creation of the Mus-Take began.

What happens when you take a 1967 Mustang and combine it with a 2011 Mustang front end? No one was quite sure what to expect when Brian announced his new project. No builder had taken these two models and molded them into one vehicle. When Finch publicized the project, many people had their doubts on the build. Once the rendering was released to the public, the vision started to form and word spread. This would either turn out to be an amazing one-off build or a complete disaster.

The first step in the Mus-Take build started by working the 2011 front end to fit the 1967 Mustang body

When it came time to plan the Mus-Take build, Finch made sure to use the best performance parts available. As parts started to arrive for the Mus-Take project, Finch shared teaser photos with his online followers. The car would get a brand new 5.0L Coyote motor along with a Holley EFI system, a Holley digital dash and a fully customized Spectre Performance Air Intake setup. These were only the first of several parts to arrive in order to complete the build.

Brian Finch Mus-Take will feature a complete Spectre Performance Custom Air Intake

Mus-Take will feature a complete Spectre Performance Custom Air Intake set-up that will be designed to draw cooler air to help increase horsepower

Creating custom air intake setups is one of Finch’s specialties. Finch has stood behind the Spectre Performance name for several years using Spectre’s Air Intake Components to create one-off air intakes for his custom builds. Throughout the years, builders have designed their own air intakes or have settled with using only a filter when building cars with custom applications. Spectre Performance developed a system that offered several different components including different bent aluminum tubing, couplers and various sized filters to help accommodate those who wanted to create a custom air intake. Just as Finch has done with past builds, he is using the Spectre Air Intake Components once again with the Mus-Take build in order to design a custom air intake that not only looks good, but draws in cold air to help increase horsepower.

Finch represents Spectre Performance with his 1970 Camaro and 1963 Corvette

Though the Mus-Take will not be ready for the 2016 race season, Finch will represent Spectre Performance on the race and show circuit with his 1970 Camaro and 1963 Corvette

A date has not been set for the final debut of Brian Finch’s Mus-Take. Though it is not ready for the 2016 race season, we will see the Spectre Performance driver in his 1970 Camaro and possibly in the 1963 Split Window throughout the year.

1991-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nissan SUVs with Spectre Air Filters Get a Performance Improvement

Caption

The Spectre HPR7440 is engineered to increase airflow and improve performance

Based on military vehicles of World War II, the sports utility vehicle (SUV) gained popularity in the United States through the 1990s and early 2000s. The first vehicle to be recognized as an SUV was the Jeep Cherokee (XJ), which was introduced by American Motors in 1984.

U.S. automakers liked it because they could garner a profit of around $10,000 per unit at a time when they were losing money on many compact vehicles. Consumers liked the large cabins, the ride height, and the apparent safety because they were massive compared to smaller vehicles that shared the road. It was an ideal vehicle for driving the kids to their after-school activities because of the space and sometimes even three-rows of seats.

SUVs were constructed over a truck chassis, which permitted more cargo space in the cabin than a conventional automobile. Many of these vehicles also featured four-wheel drive so they were ideal for off-roading.

This classification of car was so popular that the major automakers including Chrysler, which now owns Jeep; General Motors, Nissan and others introduced several SUV models in different sizes including mini, compact, mid-size, full-size, and extended length.

Caption

The Spectre Performance Air Filter Cleaner Kit can be used to easily clean the filter when necessary.

For example, Nissan introduced a compact SUV called the Xterra to North America in the 2000 model year, which shared the same platform as the Nissan Frontier pickup truck, and a full-size SUV called the Armada in 2003, which used the same platform as the Nissan Titan pickup truck. Nissan’s luxury division, Infiniti introduced the QX56, a full-size luxury SUV, in 2004.

American Motors, and later Chrysler offered variations of the Jeep including the Cherokee and the Grand Cherokee in 1993; and the Jeep Wrangler, a compact to mid-sized SUV in 1986.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency considered SUVs as light trucks. So rules relating to tailpipe emissions on them were less stringent. However, starting in 2004, the EPA began to recognize that the SUV should have the same standards of tailpipe emissions as cars. That ruling along with another oil embargo made SUVs less attractive and sales started to drop.

Spectre is aware of the need to make air filters for this classification of vehicle and offers the Spectre HPR7440 Spectre Air Filter for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Nissan Pathfinder, Xterra, and Armada as well as pickup trucks like the Nissan Titan and Frontier.

Spectre replacement filters are reusable and offer high airflow that helps to enhance horsepower and rate of acceleration. Designed to replace the stock air filter that comes with the vehicle, the Spectre HPR7440 can actually reduce airflow restrictions and features high quality materials and construction. The filter includes a urethane frame, reinforced steel mesh and synthetic filter media that is pre-oiled in the factory so it is ready to use straight out of the box.
